News Right Now: Truce & Noose

Welcome to News Right Now: ‘Truce and Noose’

A two month truce between the Yemeni government and the country’s Houthi rebels, which was the first since 2016, and set to expire this Thursday, has been extended for two months, in a deal brokered by the United Nations in Jordan. The deadline that loomed Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., co-founder of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, introduced a new resolution on May 31 invoking the 1973 War Powers Resolution to demand that Biden end U.S. military participation in the Yemen war. According to a press release from the CPC, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., will introduce a companion resolution when the Senate is back in session.

What is essentially a proxy war ultimately between the United States and the United Kingdom where both powers have been utilizing regional client states to secure their interests, carried out in Yemen and leading to hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths, and a huge and ongoing humanitarian crisis. The truce aimed to halt the conflict and all military operations inside Yemen and across its borders, operate two commercial flights a week from Houthi-controlled Sanaa to Jordan and Egypt, allow 18 fuel vessels into the port of Houthi-controlled Hodeidah, and open the roads into Taiz the country’s third-biggest city, where Houthi troops have imposed a siege since 2014 creating a crushing humanitarian catastrophe that has shocked the world like none other.

The conflict couldn’t have avoided spilling into the region and all the Gulf states were part of Saudi’s original coalition against the Houthis and the innocent people of Yemen. Their tacit support justified the Saudi rulers’ actions and effectively threw the entire region into the merciless situation against the people of Yemen - leading the whole country to suffer death, disease and abject poverty from the incessant bombings, food starvation and crippling price rises.

The UK, US and other Western countries have operated clandestinely. Supplying weapons, as in the $650 million missile sale the US made with Saudi in December, and logistical support throughout this devastating war - they enabled the blockade on Houthi territory which exposed half of the total civilian population to starvation and caused hundreds of outbreaks of disease including cholera and diphtheria.

Yemen’s President Hadi, the close ally of Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia and backed by the Biden administration who have gone back on their initial promise to isolate the crown prince - assigned his Presidential Council to negotiate with the Houthis to end the war in Yemen and reach a final and comprehensive political solution. He called for a transitional phase which will move Yemen from a state of war to a state of peace and end the division in Aden and the southern provinces.

Saudi Arabia and the US plan to push for this truce to serve their own interests, after realizing the true extent of their failure and the military stalemate they’re in with the Houthis. The consequences of the war have been costly and shown Saudi Arabia to be weak and unable to achieve its goals. Therefore limiting their regional strength and further entrenching their global reputation as no more than an brutally oppressive monarchy.

The ongoing power struggle 2.2 million children are acutely malnourished, including nearly more than half a million children facing severe acute malnutrition, a life-threatening condition. In addition, around 1.3 million pregnant or nursing mothers are acutely malnourished. At least 233,000 are estimated to have died and 80% of the population now live below the poverty line. According to the world food programme more than 17 million Yemenis are battling food insecurity and that figure is expected to rise to 19 million, or nearly one-third of the population by December 2022. As if all this wasn’t enough, 24 million people are now dependent on aid to survive.

It is self-evident that no good whatsoever can come from factions that have surrendered their political will to the secular liberal agendas of the criminal western powers, who intend only to secure their own economic salvation in every matter, and at any cost. This has been proven time and again. Every matter of truth and justice for the Muslims is re-told in the duplicitous language of human rights, tolerance and liberty, yet always harm and destruction follows Western political interference.

Allah (swt) said:

(أَفَحُكْمَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَبْغُونَ وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ اللَّهِ حُكْماً لِّقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ)

“Is it the judgment of ˹pre-Islamic˺ ignorance they seek? Who could be a better judge than Allah for people of sure faith?” [TMQ Al-Ma’idah:50].

The only solution is to resort to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (saw) to stop the war, and to pledge allegiance to a man who rules by what Allah has revealed, so that Muslims and all of humanity can enjoy the justice of Islam embodied in the establishment of a Khilafah Rashida on the method of Prophethood.
