Pearls of Wisdom by Ibn Taymiyyah: “Avoiding the temptation to sin and being patient upon that, is greater than being patient whilst being afflicted with trials...”

IBN T A Y M I Y Y A H, may Allah (swt) have mercy upon him, was born in Harran, an old city within the Arabian Peninsula between Syria and Iraq, on the tenth or the twelfth of the month Rabi al-Awwal the year 661H. He and his family were later forced to flee to Damascus due to the occupation by the Tartars. He came from a family of scholars. At an early age he amazed his teachers at the strength of his memory, keen intelligence and depth of understanding. Ibn Taymiyyah was one of the greatest scholars in which his knowledge still lives on till this day. The Ummah Voice Podcast presents our audience a segment of his quotes during the holy month of Ramadan.

One famous quote of Ibn Taymiyyah is: “Avoiding the temptation to sin and being patient upon that, is greater than being patient whilst being afflicted with trials.”

The quote mentions how controlling their desires is an internal struggle. It is conquering the "sweetness" of temptation all while being patient in resisting sins. One is given a choice to commit sins or choosing to walk away from sinning due to the love he has for Allah (swt).

Individuals who walk away from sinning and temptations is strength. He has conquered his desires all to please Allah (swt). When individuals are decreed with illness or trials they endure may endure it being patient because they know this is written from Allah (swt) and choose to be patient in hopes of gaining rewards. Individuals understand this is not in their control but walking away from a temptation that will lead to the anger of Allah (swt) this is where the strength of patience comes in.
